DetoxDroid vs AppBlock
AppBlock is the blocker with ten million installs and the feature list to match: apps, websites, URLs and keywords, profiles that switch on by time, by place or by the Wi-Fi you're connected to, an allowlist mode that turns the phone into a dumbphone, and a Strict Mode where undoing a block waits for a cooldown or for someone else's approval. It is a wall, and a well-built one. DetoxDroid doesn't build walls. It makes what's behind them gray.
The short version
AppBlock answers the question "how do I stop myself opening it" with a block that gets harder to lift: Strict Mode, a cooldown, a second person who has to agree. DetoxDroid answers a different question, "how do I make it not worth opening": the app is gray, dim and blurred, it makes you wait, a scroll that goes on too long gets interrupted, and the budget tightens before it locks. AppBlock has the longer list of ways to trigger a block (time, place, Wi-Fi, keyword) and runs on iOS and in desktop browsers too. The data safety forms are far apart: AppBlock's says it shares personal and financial info with third parties; DetoxDroid's says nothing is collected.
Where AppBlock is better
- Profiles by time, day, location or connected Wi-Fi. DetoxDroid schedules by time only.
- Strict Mode with a cooldown and third-party approval, so a block can't be lifted on impulse.
- Allowlist mode: everything blocked except the few apps you keep.
- Keyword and URL blocking, an adult content block, and browser extensions for the desktop.
- iOS as well as Android.
- Human support and a Discord, if that is how you like to get help.
Where DetoxDroid is better
- Gray, dim and blur for the apps you name, from the first minute. AppBlock changes nothing about how an app looks.
- A doomscroll interrupt by how you scroll, in any app.
- A wait before each open, and a budget that tightens as it runs out instead of a block that is either on or off.
- Do Not Disturb while it runs, an emergency brake, a text-only launcher.
- Every feature free, no Premium, no ads.
- Open source, and nothing collected. AppBlock's listing says it shares personal and financial info with third parties.

Every AppBlock cell comes from its own listing, website, docs or code as they read on 27 October 2026. "Not listed" means I couldn't find it there. German law asks a comparison to be objective and checkable, which is also simply the honest way to do it. If a cell has gone stale, tell me.
Which one
If you know a wall is what you need, and you want it to switch itself on at the office or on the home Wi-Fi, AppBlock, and pay for Premium if Strict Mode is the part you need. If walls have never held you and you want the phone to be dull rather than locked, DetoxDroid. If the data safety form is a factor, read both before you decide; they could hardly be further apart.
