DetoxDroid vs ScreenZen
ScreenZen is the friction app people on Reddit recommend when someone asks what to use instead of one sec: a pause before Instagram opens that gets longer each time you come back, a question like "Is this important?", a daily goal per app with a block at the end, and no subscription, because it lives on donations. I like it. DetoxDroid's wait screen is the same idea with a flat timer, and the rest of DetoxDroid is what ScreenZen leaves out: the colour, the scroll, the notifications.
The short version
ScreenZen is the better door: the wait grows with every open, the prompt makes you say why, the limit blocks at the end, and the settings differ by weekday and hour. DetoxDroid is the better room: the app is gray, dim and blurred once you're in, a scroll that goes on too long gets interrupted, and Do Not Disturb stays on. ScreenZen interrupts scrolling with short bursts on a timer; DetoxDroid watches the scroll itself. The data row is where they differ most: ScreenZen's Play listing says it shares app activity and device IDs with third parties and the data can't be deleted; DetoxDroid's says nothing is collected.
Where ScreenZen is better
- A wait that grows with each use, so the tenth open of the day costs more than the first. DetoxDroid's wait is the same every time.
- A prompt before the app opens, your own wording.
- Screen time counted for the distracting apps only, so Maps doesn't inflate the number.
- iOS as well as Android, and the same setup on both.
- Donation-supported, no subscription, no ads.
Where DetoxDroid is better
- Gray, dim and blur for the apps you name, all day. ScreenZen changes nothing about how an app looks.
- A doomscroll interrupt by how you scroll, in any app, not a burst timer.
- A budget that tightens as it runs out: wait, gray, scroll break, lock.
- Website lists ready-made for six categories, by path, in Chrome, Firefox and most browsers built on them.
- Do Not Disturb while it runs, an emergency brake, a commitment password, a text-only launcher.
- Open source, and nothing collected. ScreenZen's listing says it shares app activity and device IDs with third parties.

Every ScreenZen cell comes from its own listing, website, docs or code as they read on 27 October 2026. "Not listed" means I couldn't find it there. German law asks a comparison to be objective and checkable, which is also simply the honest way to do it. If a cell has gone stale, tell me.
Which one
If the thing that helps you is a door that gets heavier every time you push it, ScreenZen, and it is the friendliest of the friction apps on price. If you'd rather the room behind the door were gray and quiet, DetoxDroid. Both free, both without a subscription, so try the one that matches how you fail. If the data safety form matters to you, read the two before you decide.
